MS Office files want to open in 2010 instead of 2016

MS Office files want to open in 2010 instead of 2016 or 2019

The Problem:

When we installed Office 365, I set my defaults for all Office files to open with 2016. However, older files on my computer display the 2010 icon next to them, and when I click to open them, they try to install 2010. When I choose "open with", the window displays the Excel 2016 icon and gives me the choice of continuing to use it or choose another program. I've tried opening folders through Excel 2016 and saving them from the program, but they still want to use 2010. I don't seem to have that problem with Word files, despite many of them displaying the Word 2010 icon by them instead of 2016.

The Solution:

This issue may occur if you have a previous version of Office 2010 installed and an update was applied to that version. Windows thinks that it is the latest installation causing it to change the defaults. To further isolate this issue, let us repair your Office application to refresh it. Please follow the steps below:

  1. Right-click the Start button (lower-left corner), and select Programs/Apps and Features on the pop-up menu.

  2. Right-click the Microsoft Office product you want to repair, and select Change or Modify. You'll repair the entire Office suite even if it's just a particular application you want to repair such as Word or Excel. If you have a standalone app, then you can search for the application by name.

  3. From the "How would you like to repair your Office Programs" screen, select Online Repair to make sure everything gets fixed, and then select Repair. The Quick Repair option is also available, which runs faster but only detects and then replaces corrupted files.

  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete.
